Nail-fact file

Changes in the appearance and texture of nails often relate to nutritional deficiencies. Healthy nail beds are pink indicating a rich blood supply. Lack of protein can cause white bands across the nails. Vitamin B deficiency can result in dryness, splitting and discolouration whilst redness around the cuticles can signal poor metabolism of essential fatty acids.

Celebrity manicurist Andrea Fulerton, who has her own range of nail products - www.andreafulerton.com  recommends a weekly buff to stimulate circulation and encourage healthy growth.

  1. First file your nails in one direction only.A backwards and forwards sawing motion weakens nails as it opens up the layers leaving them vulnerable to excess water absorption. Only file nails once a week unless you have a snag or break.

  2. Using the slightly coarser side of the buffer, buff the whole surface of the nail with a gentle 'side to side' movement to help smooth out any ridges and remove the dry, dead  skin cells. Remember to seal down the very edge of the nail tip.

  3. Use the smooth, shiny side to polish nails to a high gloss finish and prepare the surface for varnish.
