HARRIET’S COMMENTS FROM THE CATWALK
Modelling is a wonderful career that can provide a good income and a fascinating life. But you do need dedication, commitment and stamina.
Fortunately, there is now a huge surge of interest in older models. Some of the girls on my books have modelled before, stopped to have families and then come back to modelling, many join without previous experience. Some have been competition winners who have gone on to forge very successful second careers.
Remember it’s not all glamorous. Modelling can often mean being on your feet all day, plus you need to be confident and able to take rejection. This gets easier!
STEEN’S TOP FIVE TIPS FOR WINNING SHOTS
|
| |
| 1. |
GETTING CLOSER. When photographing a face, remember to shoot close up but not with a wide angle as this can distort features. Use a telephoto if you have one, or the ‘zoom’ function on your camera. |
| |
| 2. |
IN THE LIGHT. If possible, use daylight instead of flash. If you’re shooting inside, stand with your back to the window so your model has a flattering front light. If you’re outside, shoot in the shade or against the sun, so the model has the sun behind them. |
| |
| 3. |
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. Shoot a few frames, then check them carefully to see what needs to be changed. Involve your model in the process. Repeat until you’re happy. |
| |
| 4. |
THE SIMPLE LIFE. Keep backgrounds as clean as possible; remove objects and patterns that catch the eye or disturb the image. Keep clothing simple – grey, black or white work well. |
| |
| 5. |
REFLECTED GLORY. For a flattering shot, place a white board or bed sheet just in front of the model – as close to the face as you can without it being seen in the frame. |
